Coaching Testimonial Request Templates
Testimonials are your most powerful marketing asset, but most coaches either never ask or ask in a way that produces generic, unhelpful responses. "They were great!" doesn't help your next prospect make a decision. What works is asking specific questions that guide your client to share their transformation in concrete, relatable terms.
These templates are designed to make the process easy for your client while ensuring you get testimonials that actually sell. The key insight is timing: ask after a breakthrough moment or at the end of a successful engagement — not randomly.
Each template uses guided questions so your client knows exactly what to say, even if they're not natural writers.
Templates
Post-Breakthrough Request
Send right after a client has a significant win or breakthrough. Strike while the emotion is fresh.
Subject: So proud of your progress! Hi [First Name], I just wanted to say how impressed I am with what you achieved this [week/month] — [specific win, e.g., "landing those 3 new clients" or "launching your automated system"]. That's a huge milestone. I have a favor to ask: would you be willing to share a short testimonial about your experience? It doesn't need to be long — even 3-4 sentences would be amazing. It really helps other [coaches/business owners/freelancers] who are in the same place you were when we started. If you're up for it, here are a few prompts to make it easy: 1. Where were you when we started working together? 2. What changed or what results did you get? 3. What would you say to someone who's considering coaching? You can just reply to this email with your thoughts, and I'll take care of the rest. I'll always show you the final version before using it anywhere. Thank you so much — and congratulations again! [Your Name]
End-of-Engagement Request
Send at the conclusion of a coaching package. A natural moment to reflect on the journey.
Subject: Quick request as we wrap up Hi [First Name], As we come to the end of our [program name/coaching engagement], I wanted to thank you for showing up and doing the work. Your results speak for themselves — [mention specific result]. I'd be really grateful if you'd share a short testimonial about your experience. It helps me reach more people like you, and your perspective is incredibly valuable. Here's a quick framework (no pressure to follow it exactly): - What was your situation before we started? - What specific results or changes have you experienced? - What surprised you about the process? - Would you recommend this to others? Why? Just reply to this email — even a few sentences would mean the world. I'll always share the final version with you for approval before publishing it anywhere. Grateful for you, [Your Name]
Video Testimonial Request
For clients who are comfortable on camera. Video testimonials are significantly more persuasive than text.
Subject: Quick 60-second video favor? Hi [First Name], Your transformation has been incredible, and I think your story would genuinely help others who are in the same boat you were [timeframe] ago. Would you be open to recording a quick 60-second video testimonial? It doesn't need to be polished — your phone camera is perfect. Authenticity beats production quality every time. Here's all you need to cover: 1. Your name and what you do (10 seconds) 2. Where you were before coaching (15 seconds) 3. What changed / your biggest result (20 seconds) 4. Who you'd recommend this to (15 seconds) Just record it on your phone and text or email it to me. If you prefer, we can also hop on a quick Zoom and I'll record it with your permission. Totally understand if video isn't your thing — a written testimonial works great too! Thank you, [Your Name]
Best Practices
- Always ask at an emotional high point — after a win, a breakthrough, or the end of a successful engagement
- Provide specific prompts so they don't stare at a blank page
- Make it clear that you'll show them the final version before publishing — this removes anxiety
- Follow up once if they don't respond, but don't push — some people just aren't comfortable
- Video testimonials are 2-3x more persuasive than text, so always offer it as an option
- Never fabricate or heavily edit testimonials — authenticity is what makes them work
